In Fourth Grade Math Workshop, we will be focusing on the following goals:
|
Warm Up and Mini LessonEach day, students will start with a warm up problem or problems that will stimulate their problem-solving skills, review a previously learned concept, or help them engage in math talk. Then, Mrs. Happe will teach a mini lesson about the math skill for that day. These mini lessons will range from 20 minutes to 40 minutes in length, depending on the topic.

Math CentersEach day, students will have ample time to engage in math centers. Students will have the opportunity to engage in four different M.A.T.H Centers this year:
Mrs. Happe (Guided Practice with the teacher) With Mrs. Happe, students will work on breaking down multi-step problems, reviewing math concepts or skills, or expanding on math concepts or skills. Students will be working at an appropriate level in these groups and this is the time for Mrs. Happe to meet with students one on one to ensure learning is taking place. At Your Seat (Independent Work) Students at their seats will have the option to work on a variety of tasks. First, they will be finishing any independent classwork that has been assigned to them by Mrs. Happe. They then will be asked to solve a word problem using their Exemplars problem-solving steps. Finally, students can engage in weekly Journaling Prompts to get them writing about math! Technology (Class computers or Chromebooks) This center is an opportunity for students to take advantage of our online resources: IXL and Reflex Math. This is in addition to the time spent at home working with these programs! Hands-On (Math Games) In this center, students will get the opportunity to play math games focusing on various concepts learned throughout the year. They will have a choice of games to play as the year goes on, and this is their time to engage in the concepts being taught in a deeper way. |
Share and Fact FluencyAt the end of each Math Workshop, students will share either with their Math Partners or by using Exit Tickets.
In addition to the Math Workshop Time, students will have the opportunity to engage each day in specific Fact Fluency practice (10 minutes each day and during Math Centers time on Fridays). It is during this time that Mrs. Happe will assess students using Math Running Records to determine what specific set of facts students should be focusing on. She will then teach them a strategy for mastering those facts. Students will have the opportunity to practice those specific sets of facts and take "Just Knew It" Quizzes in order to move on in the continuum. *PLEASE NOTE* By Grade 4, students should have mastered all multiplication and division facts through 1,000. Meaning, they should have mastered all of the facts on the continuum below PRIOR to entering 4th grade. However, if that is not the case, students will be working towards that goal every day. |
